I now offer photograph tuition on a variety of subjects to everyone from complete beginners to those getting to grips with studio lighting. I prefer to teach 1-1 or small groups but I've occasionally given talks or demonstrations for larger audiences.

Bernadette IIBernadette IIDancer: Bernadette Lemon

  • I teach 1-1 studio lighting sessions with models in my own studio in Saffron Walden
  • I've made a particular study of the use of light - finding, modifying, using and creating your own light
  • Want to get off automatic? I can help you get more out of your camera!
  • I've taught small groups on photographic holidays
  • I've researched composition in some detail - I can show you some new ways of thinking about putting images together
  • I have an insight into the particular challenges of working with dancers and acrobats
  • I have a pragmatic approach to processing in Lightroom and Photoshop

I'm always learning, too - there are lots of areas where I don't claim to be an expert. Please get in touch with your interests and requirements and I'll let you know whether I think I can help you.

I'd just like to finish with this reference from a recent tuition session:

After deciding I’d like to try some 1-1 tuition to further my photography skills, an opportunity came up to book a 3 hour session with Simon, covering lighting setup and working with models, two areas I’m keen to expand and to help solidify some of my ideas and understanding.

This was also the first time I’d had the opportunity to work with a professional model and felt this would be a great way to start, having someone experienced as a guide. In the week leading to the shoot we discussed the planned itinerary, with Simon getting a feel for my goals and expectations for the day, tailoring the day accordingly.

I found Simon very easy going during the session, never judging, offering great advice throughout and pacing the day appropriately, able to skip over areas where I was already comfortable to maximise the learning experience. In the three hours, I felt I’d learned a huge amount and came away with some great images as reference for what we'd covered that day.

Working with Bernadette Lemon for the session was another great experience, with Simon there to help advise on providing both feedback and model direction during a shoot.

I’d recommend Simon to anyone wanting 1-1 tuition, if Simon lived closer to me (I live over 170 miles away), I’d be having many more sessions, I do still hope to arrange more at some point.
